Nowadays, they’re an expected element for businesses who wish to verify their online identity and build trust amongst their customers.

It can be a minefield if you’re unsure as to which options are available or which type of certificate is best for your business.

This article will show you the pros and cons of the different types of SSL’s available to help you make an informed decision based on your requirements.

What is an SSL certificate?

Secure Sockets Layer certificates (SSL), are used to create trust, privacy and identify your business online.

They work by securing the flow of communication, through the use of encryption, between a website and internet users.

This helps to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks on your data and acts as a deterrent to hackers by creating a secure connection between the browser and the server.

In order to get an SSL for your site, you’ll need to have your domain registered. The Certified Authorities (CA) will need to be able to verify the domain before they can provide you with a certificate.

Once you have an SSL in place, internet users can easily identify the security of your site from the padlock icon next to the URL, also known as a trust seal. Once in place, “HTTPS” (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) will also prefix your URL. Having the additional “S” at the end of HTTP denotes that the site is “Secure”.

Google wants to protect the security of internet users, and as a result, factored HTTPS as a ranking signal as of 2014. Although it’s not a high-ranking factor, it will still have an impact on SEO within your business. Having HTTPS has been shown to improve overall page visibility as well as keyword rankings.

You can check if your current SSL certificate is valid through CWCS, just pop in your domain details, here.

When choosing an SSL certificate, you should consider the following factors:

  • Domains – The number of domains and subdomains you want to secure will affect the type of certificate you require.
  • Security – What sensitive information is processed on your site and what customer data do you capture.
  • Support – What level of support is offered by the SSL provider. Do they have a troubleshooting team available? Free SSL providers won’t necessarily offer round the clock support.
  • Price – How much do you realistically need to invest into your SSL. Certifications can be valid for varying lengths of time so this is another element to consider.
  • Validation – The level of validation you wish to display through the certificate and what level of information this contains.
  • Warranty – Does the provider have a warranty with their certificates? The higher the warranty, the more you are covered. Keep in mind that you won’t get a warranty with a free SSL provider.
  • Reputation – It’s best to obtain your certificate from reputable CA’s
  • Issuance Time – For more advanced certificates, the process will take longer as a more in-depth verification process is required – hence the higher level of trust given by these certificates.

Encryption levels are actually the same regardless of what type of SSL you choose. The main difference is the verification process required to secure the certificate.

Different types of SSL’s

Lets Encrypt

Let’s Encrypt is an open-source organization that aims to provide a free option for website owners to secure their domains and by extension the wider internet.

Let’s Encrypt is one of the most commonly used free SSL tools. Originating in California they operate a not-for-profit service with the outlook of providing free encryptions for businesses.

These are most suited to smaller businesses with a low number of web pages and who aren’t collecting data from their customers or visitors. They also work well for testing sites, blog sites and internal non-public facing sites.

Pros

  • Firstly, it’s free! Which is a great cost saving benefit to smaller businesses.
  • It’s easy to install.
  • You can automate renewals for sites by installing a plug-in for your control panel.
  • You can benefit from a range of community support options.
  • They also offer SAN certificates, Subject Alternative Name, to allow for multiple domain name protection.

Cons

  • If you haven’t installed the correct plug-ins, you need to manually renew your certificate every 3 months.
  • It’s important to remember, you don’t get warranty with these certificates. So, if there is an issue, you will not be entitled to receive compensation.
  • You won’t have access to round the clock support due to it being open-source. Therefore, you may have to wait a while for troubleshooting and advice.
  • Wildcard certificates are not available through free platforms.

Domain Verification SSL

Domain Verification (DV) SSL’s are a great option for businesses who need an SSL quickly and at little expense. DV requires the CA’s to check that the applicant has the right to use that specific domain name.

They do this by obtaining a response from their Domain Control Validation email. However, aside from this, no other company information is checked or verified. This means that only the Secure Site Seal is displayed on the certificate along with the padlock icon and HTTPS.

Pros

  • They are issued almost immediately and you aren’t required to submit any paperwork.
  • They also have the same browser recognition that Organization Verification and Extended Verification have, without the time implication of setup.
  • Very affordable option.

Cons

  • Your company information isn’t listed on the certificate itself, meaning that essentially, anyone could register under your domain without actual proof of ownership.

Organization Verification SSL

With Organization Verification (OV) SSL’s, CA’s must validate both the domain and the business before issuing the certificate. These are an elevated version of DV. These are ideal for e-commerce sites or sites dealing with sensitive customer data.

These essentially verify that the organization using the certificate is a registered government entity. They also check factors such as locality presence and sometimes even telephone verification.

Pros

  • Issued within 24 hours.
  • Displays company information on the certificate.
  • Offers higher bit encryption than DV.
  • For e-commerce sites or sites that manage payment details, the higher the encryption, the better.
  • OV certificates are the only type which can be used to validate IP addresses where a domain isn’t registered.

Cons

  • Site visitors will have to know where to look in order to find the information.
  • These can still take between 2-3 days to be issued.

Extended Verification SSL

These certificates are often used when the highest level of security is required. For example, government bodies or e-commerce sites would require Extended Verification (EV) to secure trust with their users.

EV requires the provider to verify the following information: the business has officially authorized the issuance, that they have the exclusive rights to the specific domains, that the business’s identity matches official records and that they can verify the legal and operational existence.

It will also display the country in the address bar along with the business name.

Pros

  • They offer increased warranty and they have a higher validation level.
  • It’s difficult for hackers to obtain EV certificates as it’s likely that the CA’s would notice discrepancies in the applications.
  • EV have the longest certificate length options of up to two years, unlike DV and OV who only run up to a year.
  • Having an EV shows your customers that you are doing everything you can to protect their data.

Cons

  • For single domains, this is by far the most expensive option.
  • The issuance time is quite lengthy and can take between 3-5 days to obtain.
  • The process can also be delayed if any discrepancies are found within the documentation, thus requiring the business to provide further details and evidence.
  • Google is slowly phasing out the defining indicators of EVs certificates from others.
  • The green address bar no longer comes with EVs certificates.
  • Research has shown that it wasn’t as effective in preventing phishing attacks as initially thought and was still subject to being copied by malicious websites.

Multi-domain SSL’s

These are designed for businesses that have multiple domains (e.g., example.com, example.net).

These types of SSL’s can also be referred to as SAN certificates as the domains themselves are listed as Subject Alternative Names. This is the best option for businesses who want to secure multiple domains they operate.

Multi-domain SSL’s can also be referred to as Unified Communication certificates, where you have the flexibility to amend the domain names if required.

Pros

  • They can cover up to 100 domain names under just one certificate. Saving you money and time on purchasing multiple certificates.
  • Users will have the ability to easily manage and change or move domains as required.
  • It can be used across as many servers and IP’s as needed and most providers will offer round the clock support.

Cons

  • Multi-domain SSL’s are only available with DV or OV.
  • There is a risk of downtime where certificate updates are required as the certificate must be replaced on all the sites using the certificate.

Wildcard SSL’s

Wildcard SSL’s are ideal for covering a range of sub-domains. They allow you to manage an unlimited number of sub-domains under one certificate. This is great if you have an expanding site and want the option to add more sub-domains in the future.

Domains can fall into two categories to make them easier to manage: sub-domains and fully-qualified domains.

For example, a wildcard SSL can protect: www.example.com, blog.example.com, shop.example.com, but will not protect example.com on its own.

Pros

  • Great for businesses who are looking to scale online as they allow for easy growth and flexibility.
  • You don’t have to purchase multiple certificates and equally don’t have to go through the whole validation process over and over.
  • Saves costs on having to purchase additional certificates.

Cons

  • Wildcards are only available in DV and OV certificates.
  • There can be compatibility issues with older operating systems.
  • They also only cover one subdomain level so if you need different levels of subdomains then technically you would have to purchase one of each level which would be costly.
  • If you have multiple people managing the SSL then you would have to share private key details which could increase the risk of security.
  • It’s also worth noting that if you are using just one certificate across multiple servers then a single compromise will result in you having to re-issue all the certificates.

As you can see, getting SSL’s for your domains is imperative to maintaining data security and trust between your business and your online customers and visitors.

What Route Will Amazon Take Without Bezos At The Helm? https://adzooma.com/blog/amazon-bezos-stepping-down/ https://adzooma.com/blog/amazon-bezos-stepping-down/#respond Wed, 03 Feb 2021 15:07:48 +0000 https://www.adzooma.com/blog/?p=23277 The King is dead, long live the king?

Well, not quite. But it doesn’t feel that far off. Bezos’ departure has come as a huge shock to the tech industry. He’s been omnipresent in any tech-head’s life for what seems like forever.

From seeing his smug face pop up for the first time in 1997 when you could almost tell by his smile that he knew he was destined for glory, to being roasted by Chris Rock at the Oscars just last year, we’ve seen Bezos rise from nothing, to one of the most powerful men in the world in less than 25 years.

Bezos has become, without doubt, a tech industry legend. Love him or loathe him, you can’t fail to put him on a pedestal alongside the likes of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Larry Page who have changed the world in one way or another.

Jeff Bezos has done that too. Not many Kings have.

What does this mean for Amazon?

Stock fluctuations are usually a good indicator and at this stage the answer seems to be: not that much.

Stocks closed at 1.11% up for the day, which is pretty standard for Amazon and a good sign for Amazon they’ve made the right decision in choosing their next main man.

The man in question? CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Andy Jassy.

Jassy, a Harvard grad, has been at Amazon in one form or another since 1997, beginning life in the marketing department before moving to found AWS in 2003 where he became CEO in 2014.

“He’s a win-at-all-costs type of person,” said Zoltan Szabadi, a Google Cloud employee who formerly worked alongside Jassy. “This is just one of the many tactics that he thinks will help his business.”

Those tactics seem to be working too. A subsidiary of Amazon.com inc (the mothership), as of 2017 AWS owned a dominant 33% share of the internet’s cloud services and generated $35billion in revenue in 2019.

Its power, though, is bigger than numbers. The tech boom was built on AWS’ infrastructure. It’s pretty much invisible to the general public, yet if it fell, not only would we norms go into post-AWS shock, but so would governments around the world. NASA, the CIA, Spotify and Netflix amongst so many others are powered by AWS.

There’s no doubting Jassy has done an impressive job, but this is quite the step up, and as Tim Cook found taking over from Steve Jobs — handling someone else’s baby isn’t always easy.

While Bezos doesn’t move from the CEO to his new Executive Chairman role until the third quarter of 2021, he has taken a reduced role in the running of the company over the last few years, so the transition is unlikely to cause much of a hiccup.

Amazon dropped an astounding earnings report too yesterday which showed the company nearly doubled its sales and profits last year, so as Bezos said when announcing he was stepping down, “Amazon couldn’t be better positioned for the future.”

What that future looks like is anyone’s guess at the moment. There are so many arms to Amazon – from Prime to Logistics, from Robotics to Publishing – that whatever the strategy is, Andy Jassy will have a lot to juggle.

Not least dealing with the Federal Trade Commission investigation that came to an end yesterday concluding that, “Amazon baited drivers with promised earnings, and then secretly slashed wages by pocketing tips.” A despicable move when you consider Amazon earned $386 billion in 2020 and Amazon drivers earn close to the minimum wage.

So is that the reason Bezos is moving on? To help Amazon turn over a new leaf after years of bad press which ranges from warehouse worker maltreatment to alleged anti competitive practices?

This doesn’t seem to be stopping the company itself, though. We’ve seen clear indicators that Amazon aren’t holding back on the alleged anti competition as they look to cement themselves as the world’s central fulfilment outlet, with the creation of services that will carry out the fulfilment like Amazon Air and Amazon Prime Air, to the expansion into the likes of groceries and Pharmacy that will do the fulfilling.

This will be Jassy’s biggest test. Toeing the line between good and bad.

Maybe Bezos feels it’s time to get out before his legacy is tarnished by the latter?

What does this mean for Jeff Bezos?

Just in the same way Tom Brady insisted he wasn’t retiring when he left the New England Patriots, Bezos has made it clear he’s got plenty more to give.

In a similar mould to when Bill Gates stepped away from Microsoft, Bezos has stated that his ambition is to do good. Two of the major projects he’s talked about working on are of a philanthropic nature: The Day 1 Fund and the Bezos Earth Fund, which are starting with $2 billion and $10 billion to help homeless families and fight climate change, respectively.

Bezos also seems to be inspired by the man who recently took his place as the world’s richest man too, Elon Musk, as he’ll look to continue forward with his work on Blue Origin to “help make space travel mainstream”.

And it’s also very important not to forget that Bezos owns the Washington Post, one of America’s most popular and powerful dailies. Whether Bezos will venture further into media ala Rupert Murdoch is anyone’s guess. This doesn’t seem like a very Bezos thing to do, but it’s something to stay mindful of.

However, will Bezos really step away from Amazon anyway? Not everyone thinks so. Speaking to Reuters, CFRA analyst Tuna Amobi said, “I don’t think he’s going to be completely hands off.”

While Ken Perkins, President of RetailMetrics LLC also told Reuters similar, “Jeff Bezos has held a firm grip on the company for a long time. I have to believe he will have a say in what is going on and have a big hand in big picture decisions.”

Whether that’s in a reduced capacity role like Gates initially went into at Microsoft or as Reuters put it, “step[ping] down without stepping away”, it’s certainly going to be interesting to see what happens.

If this is a move to help Amazon “turn over a new leaf”, it does make sense that stepping down without stepping away may be the action here.

That was Brady’s tactic too, but at least he actually left the building.

What does this mean for marketers?

It’s very hard to say right now. Jassy has proven adept at building the most profitable part of Amazon, but moving into e-commerce is a different ball game.

However, if that success translates easily, then for us as marketers and business owners, we need to be in a position to piggyback off Amazon’s success and that means making yourself an Amazon Ads expert and getting to grips with their whole ecosystem.

I know there will be some of you out there reading this who believe we should fight Amazon’s dominance, and that’s right we should in whatever way we can. We’ve seen the damage that Amazon can do to small businesses and the way it gobbles up the industry. Yet Amazon does offer legitimate ways to improve your business too. There are so many small businesses out there that wouldn’t exist without Amazon.

Some may see this as Amazon swallowing the economy, but to watch idly while Amazon eats you up is only self sabotage.

Bezos or not, Amazon isn’t changing anytime soon. Antitrust isn’t going to change anything either.

What is going to change is every corner of the e-commerce industry and that’s not an overstatement.

We need to be in a position to benefit from that if we want to survive and thrive.

‘I Save At Least a Day a Week Using Adzooma’: The Story of a Business Owner https://adzooma.com/blog/story-ecommerce-business-owner-adzooma/ https://adzooma.com/blog/story-ecommerce-business-owner-adzooma/#respond Tue, 02 Feb 2021 11:27:35 +0000 https://www.adzooma.com/blog/?p=23220 One of the more frustrating things about being a paid marketing manager is how many hours is spent on repetitive tasks when your time could be spent elsewhere

That’s exactly what was going through the mind of Joshua Ivars Medina when he was combing through his ad campaigns three months ago.

Joshua started in paid marketing in 2012. “Back then I could set up campaigns and within one or two weeks they’d be primed and I’d barely have to touch them.”

But paid marketing has come a long way since then. As it expanded in it’s complexity, the hours spent going back and forth into Google, Microsoft and Facebook has only grown.

“That former scenario would be a dream now,” Joshua continued. “Now you have to refine and optimise so often. PPC has changed so much.”

In the 8 years since Joshua started in paid marketing, he’s become an all round marketing expert and is now the Founder & CEO of La Tienda Del Apicultor, an ecommerce business based in Spain that specialise in high-quality beekeeping equipment.

Back in November, as he looked to start scaling his business and campaigns, he turned to Adzooma. And at the end of January he spoke to us about what his journey’s been like so far.

“Without Adzooma, we would have to do this process manually”

“We have PPC experts in house,” Joshua explained when discussing his business. “But if there is something that we can’t solve or we have a big project that will take months and months of work, we will look to an agency. That was until I found Adzooma.

“I took a look at Adzooma because I thought it could save us time. We needed to build campaigns for other countries like France, Portugal, Germany and Italy, and to replicate these campaigns with our resources, on top of the tasks that we currently have would have taken months of work. But Adzooma has made this really easy to replicate. Without Adzooma, we would have to do this process manually.”

It’s something we’ve worked hard on at Adzooma, making campaign creation so easy. We know that using Google, Microsoft and Facebook Ads’ native networks can be fiddly and clunky so we made sure our interface went through rigorous user testing to make it super clean and easy to use – something we’ve come to expect from a SAAS platform in 2021.

“Adzooma is really helpful for us especially as it’s really easy to set location targeting up and to optimise it. It’s super cool and clear.”

Microsoft Advertising has “been super useful, I’m really surprised”

“I mostly use Adzooma for the Management and the Reporting, because they’re really useful and I think all the reports we are served with are great.

“However, thanks to Adzooma I also started to use Microsoft Advertising too. Honestly, I used to think it was a waste of time because they have such a small share, but with Adzooma, because it’s so quick and easy to build campaigns, I thought I’d give it a go and it’s been super useful, I’m really surprised.”

That is one of the things with Microsoft Advertising. It does have this reputation for being small and ineffective, yet it’s audience is still vast:

  • 13.7 billion monthly PC searches
  • 638 million unique PC users
  • Reaches 63 million users that Google doesn’t

Plus, it’s far from ineffective. At the start of January 2021 we did a study comparing the conversions, clicks and cost of Microsoft vs Google ad campaigns and the results were pretty interesting.

And, exclusively with Adzooma, you can get $125 in Microsoft ad credits for just $25 when you sign up for a new Microsoft Advertising account.

Then, you can sign up to Adzooma for free, connect your Google and Microsoft accounts, and manage both accounts in one platform so you never have to hop between the two.

The best of both worlds.

“I save at least a day a week using Adzooma”

“Me and the team used to spend two or three days a week going through creating and optimising campaigns, but now that’s been stripped back to one day because of the software,” says Joshua.

“I use the time to test new ad copy and work on ad creatives now I don’t have to work on the manual side of the business. It allows us to focus on things that bring more value. I save at least a day a week using Adzooma.”

That’s one of the great things about being able to ditch the manual work. Having time to work on the creative and strategic side of the business, which can bring so much business value.

That isn’t always easy. So in a collaborative study with the University of Cambridge in December 2020 we took a deep dive into finding out how to improve your landing page and your content strategy. They’re two articles you should really have a scout over if you’re looking to take your campaigns to the next level.

Another thing that will take your campaigns to the next level is us implementing the feedback you give us – that’s why we love speaking to our customers for pieces like this, the freelancer Phil Bacon and the PPC agency owner Phil Byrne.

“It would be great to have Google Shopping campaigns,” said Joshua when we asked him what he’d like to see added to Adzooma. “It’s such a big driver of traffic for us and if it could solve us the same amount of time that the rest of the platform does, that would be great.

“We’ll wait for it.”

At least, while Joshua waits, he can work on the strategic side of his business rather than repetitive paid marketing work.

How Will FLoC Affect Your PPC Strategy When Third-Party Cookies Die? https://adzooma.com/blog/floc-ppc-strategy-third-party-cookies/ https://adzooma.com/blog/floc-ppc-strategy-third-party-cookies/#respond Wed, 27 Jan 2021 11:19:08 +0000 https://www.adzooma.com/blog/?p=23043 If you’re the Cookie Monster, look away now.

Google announced the phasing out of third-party cookies in its Chrome browser platform by 2022 and members of the digital marketing community aren’t too happy since Chrome has an estimated 63.38% global browser market share on all devices. On 25th January, Google unveiled its new alternative to cookies called Federated Learning of Cohorts (or FLoC) but what does this all mean for PPC marketers and their strategies?

In this article, I’ll be examining cookies, why they’re getting culled, and what PPC marketers will need to do once they’re gone as well more information on Google’s Privacy Sandbox and the recently revealed FLoC.

What are cookies?

Cookies (also known as HTTP cookies, web cookies, Internet cookies, and browser cookies) are pieces of data stored on a user’s computer by their browser. They were created by Lou Montulli as a way for websites to remember things like the items you had in your shopping cart or login details. Cookies had helpful intentions but soon, e-commerce grew and cookies were used to aid online advertising and track users behaviour.

There are two main types of cookies:

First-party cookies

First-party cookies are created and stored by websites and allow site owners to collect data such as:

  • User language settings
  • Analytics data
  • Shopping carts items
  • Usernames and passwords

This is what cookies were initially designed to do and help to improve user experience.

Third-party cookies

Third-party cookies are created by third parties on behalf of websites who use them. Unlike first party cookies, they have more ad-focused uses such as:

  • Cross-site tracking
  • Serving ads
  • Retargeting ads

The main differences between first-party and third-party cookies are the intentions behind the data collection, what they’re used for, and who manages the cookies.

Why are third-party cookies dying?

Privacy concerns

The user of tracking cookies grew in prevalence over time and they started to track long-term user behaviour. This activity posed a privacy threat and in 2011, European and U.S. lawmakers took action. For all websites involving EU traffic, site owners had to acquire “informed consent” from users before storing non-essential cookies on their devices.

Sketchy alternatives

With so many major browsers blocking third-party cookies, developers have created new ways to bypass the blocks such as ‘fingerprinting’, where setting changes are used to track users. On the plus side, Google is aware and continues to extinguish its use.

What will this mean for PPC strategies?

Google’s ban of third-party cookies is arguably a good idea but it will affect both digital advertisers and Google itself in terms of ad revenue for both sides. So what will PPC strategies look like once those cookies crumble? And is FLoC a good substitute?

I spoke with my colleague, Sophie Logan, a PPC manager at Adzooma.

“As marketers, we knew third-party cookies wouldn’t last forever and since the introduction of the new GDPR, it was only a matter of time until this came into force. I think off the back of this, a loss of data is the most powerful side effect for PPC strategies and technologies in 2021.

We will need to rely more heavily on first-party cookie platforms such as Facebook and Google. This will increase their control and power of user data, and provide them with data which is not available to other advertisers.”

In terms of next steps, Sophie suggested PPC marketers adapt to the new situation and “up their game”:

“Adapt and overcome. Advertisers have no choice but to up their game. But at least everyone (well almost everyone) is in the same boat.”

Privacy Sandbox and Federated Learning of Cohorts

Launched on 25th January 2021, Federated Learning of Cohorts (FLoC) provides an “effective replacement signal for third-party cookies” with early tests reaching in-market and affinity Google Audiences expected to see “at least 95% of the conversions per dollar spent when compared to cookie-based advertising.”

However, the new technique hasn’t pleased everyone with some advertisers claiming it is anti-competitive. The CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) are currently investigating the Privacy Sandbox proposal after a group of companies in digital marketing, news media and tech complained that Google was abusing its position by phasing out third-party cookie support.

Speaking to Sophie, she understands marketers’ concerns:

“From what I’ve heard from marketers, it looks like the use of ‘sensitive’ data is a major concern. I think that opens up the whole issue of morals when it comes to advertising and how data is used. Currently, we don’t have access to universally determined ‘sensitive’ data, but this could open that up.”

As for the Privacy Sandbox project, Google says its project’s mission is to “create a thriving web ecosystem that is respectful of users and private by default”:

“The main challenge to overcome in that mission is the pervasive cross-site tracking that has become the norm on the web and on top of which much of the web’s ability to deliver and monetize content has been built.”

Google wants to combat those sketchy non-cookie techniques like fingerprinting, cache inspection, and link decoration to maintain users’ privacy and improve the Web experience for everyone. It’s early days regarding privacy issues with the project so we’ll see how it develops.

A remarketing redux is required

Sophie said it’d be impossible to run remarketing in its current state which means the technique will need to change in order to survive.

A loss in revenue

Without remarketing (at least in its current form) and with reduced user data, there will be a significant impact to revenue for advertisers and Google. Users will also get more irrelevant and repetitive ads and could tank important KPIs like click-through rate.

According to Google Ads, cookie-less traffic yielded an average of 52% percent less revenue for the ad publisher.

Conversion tracking will take a hit

If you can’t track user behaviour, you won’t be able to assess your ads’ effectiveness in the same way. That lack of conversion tracking will therefore impair value proposition which is an important part of PPC strategy.

People-based marketing

There’s also “people-based marketing”, introduced by Facebook, which uses first-party data and isn’t affected by cookies. It compares user IDs with customer data to help advertisers find targetable users for their ads. Google can also use first-party data for similar uses but with their ongoing anti-trust lawsuits, who knows how effective they’ll continue to be in their current state.

Outside of the tech giants, data management platforms are looking at alternative ways to help advertisers to track their data. Sophie recommends looking into alternatives now and to stay up to date with cookie news.

“Using customer data and offline data will allow advertisers to compare their quality and identify the best users to target. There will also be more reliance on contextual advertising, such a native ads, where the ad content is tailored to the content of the website rather than a specific user.”

Conclusion

It will be interesting to see how advertisers react to these changes and whether they’ll embrace FLoC or try more basic strategies but with more resources and consideration.

Online advertising worked before the use of third-party cookies, and they will be able to continue without them too. This will require advertisers to more manually ensure that they are targeting the right individuals with relevant messaging.

From Google’s perspective, it’s important that the company gets FLoC right and doesn’t alienate its customers further.

How To Identify Conversion Pain Points In eCommerce https://adzooma.com/blog/how-to-identify-conversion-pain-points-ecommerce/ https://adzooma.com/blog/how-to-identify-conversion-pain-points-ecommerce/#respond Fri, 10 Jul 2020 07:57:56 +0000 https://www.adzooma.com/blog/?p=15120 Conversion pain points are the points where your customers encounter a problem during the conversion journey. If the problem isn’t solved, it will stop them from converting.

Let me be blunt here. Pain points are killing your conversions, which mean fewer sales and less profits. If you don’t identify these pain points, you’re going to continue losing conversions.

Ready to do something about it?

Read on to find out how to identify your pain points, the most common reasons customers might not be converting and how to fix these problems.

How to identify your pain points

To identify your conversion pain points, you need to set up tracking and analytics for your website. Without this data, it will be impossible to pinpoint exactly where your customers are dropping off and where you need to focus your attention on.

If you’re not already using Google Analytics, this is the first place to start as it gives you data such as:

  • Who is visiting your site
  • Which pages people are looking at
  • Where people are leaving your site
  • How long people are spending on your site
  • And much more

Programs like Hotjar are also incredibly useful here, as they literally show you what your users are doing on your page. You can see where they click, which bits they spend the longest on and how they scroll through the page.

This allows you to literally see where people are stuck on your website, showing your conversion pain points first hand.

Ask your customers

Looking at the data is always the first step to identifying your conversion pain points. But if you’re still not sure what it is that is preventing your customers from converting, you can always ask them.

Setting up a survey is a good way to get feedback directly from your customers and getting them to tell you what they don’t like, what’s stopping them from buying and what you can do better.

These surveys can be triggered when users go to exit your site, meaning you can literally stop someone who hasn’t converted and find out why.

Test new changes

Once you’ve identified where your customers are dropping off, it’s not good enough to just guess the reason why and mark the situation as fixed.

Any changes that you make need to be tested. It’s how you can see if what you’re doing has made a difference, or if there’s something else that’s causing customers to drop off.

Split testing (or A/B testing) is a way of testing these changes against the original version. When visitors come onto your site, they’ll be shown either the old or new page to see which of them perform better.

VWO has written a guide on split testing which you should definitely check out.

Common pain points and how to fix them

When it comes to conversions, there isn’t really a perfect formula. It’s about seeing where your customers stumble and doing everything you can to make the conversion journey as smooth as possible for them.

Most of it relies on using your own data and testing changes to see if they improve your conversion rate.

However, there are a few common pitfalls that your website might be falling into. To make sure you’re not suffering from them, we’ve listed some of the most common conversion pain points that you need to keep an eye on and how to fix them.

1. Not enough information

85% of people research a product online before making a purchase.

The internet is not always a good place. For every business, there’s another fake website and scam that can offer similar items to yours. Before making a purchase, your customers need to know that you’re selling the real thing.

Even if people trust your company, they’ll want to know that your product is the best place to buy it online. If they can’t get the details they need, they’ll go somewhere else.

The good thing about this conversion pain point is that it’s an easy one to fix. Just make sure you’re including the information that your customers will need. This can include:

  • Product dimensions or sizing
  • Product images
  • Testimonials and reviews from other customers
  • Materials/ingredients
  • Return information
  • Guarantees/warranty information

Reviews and testimonials shouldn’t be ignored here. They are a fantastic way of building trust and easing any lingering doubts about your product that customers will have.

2. Too many checkout stages

Cart abandonment is a real issue in eCommerce. For some industries, the cart abandonment rate is as high as 75%.

One of the biggest reasons for cart abandonment is a complicated checkout process. No one wants to jump through several hoops just to buy one item. The longer and more complicated a checkout process is, the more chances you’ve giving your customers to turn away.

Thankfully, checkout customization is one of the key features that leading website builder solutions offer, as blogger Kaleigh Moore points out.

The checkout process should be as streamlined as possible. Take a look at Amazon’s checkout as inspiration. Their checkout is easy, simple and has very little steps involved. Even better, if you’ve got your information saved you can buy it in a single click. That’s efficient.

If you don’t have a guest checkout option, this might be the first stage. Having an account with a company is great if you know you’re definitely going to be coming back. But if this is a one-time purchase, it’s a hassle creating passwords and submitting all your information for this.

Not everyone wants to give this information over. They just want to pay and go. Not giving them this option is just inviting them to buy elsewhere.

3. Slow page speed

Slow page loading times may seem like a little annoyance, but they can literally kill your sales. Each year, slow-loading websites cost retailers $2.6 billion in lost sales.

Your users are impatient and expect your website to load instantaneously. In fact, 47% of users expect a maximum of 2 seconds to load a website. 2 seconds. Wow.

If your page takes too long to load, people will leave. That means you’re losing people before they’ve even had a chance.

You can use tools like Google’s PageSpeed Insights to test the speed of your page and see what is slowing your website down.

If you’re an Adzooma customer, we’ll automatically check the site speed of all your landing pages to keep an eye out for this conversion pain point.

4. No upfront pricing

In a study about cart abandonment, the biggest reason that people abandoned their carts is because of extra costs such as shipping, taxes or fees being too high.

Source: Baymard

I’ve been there before. One time, I found a perfect notebook that would make an excellent present for my writer friend. I was sold and went straight to checkout. But, after entering all my details I found out that shipping cost more than the item itself, leading to a very speedy exit there. This perfect item was no longer worth it for me because of hidden costs.

Although you might not be able to lower these fees, one way to counter the drop off in customers is to be transparent and open about these prices from the very beginning.

When researching your product, your customers want to know exactly how much it will cost them. They shouldn’t have to go through the entire checkout process just to get an estimate on shipping and taxes.

So, include messaging about these costs on your website. There are some apps that will allow users to enter their postcode and calculate shipping costs on the page, helping to cut your cart abandonment rate.

That’s not the end

Increasing your conversions is never a one-time fix. It’s a continuous cycle of optimisations and fixes to keep beating your personal best and get the best conversion rate for your business.

There are countless CRO tools that you can use to help you with this. But if you’re lacking the time to learn and implement all these changes, you can always trust a local agency to help.
